2016 Aston Martin Vulcan

There’s been a lot of talk lately about Aston Martin’s financial troubles and whether or not the brand will manage to survive on its own. A recent report suggests the Brits might receive financial backing from its biggest shareholder, Italy-based equity fund Investindustrial S.p.A., but while that possibility won’t materialize anytime soon, it seems Aston Martin is ready to launch an all-new vehicle nevertheless. Dubbed Vulcan and described as "something very special," Aston Martin’s new project turned out to be a track-focused supercar in the vein of the Ferrari FXX K and the McLaren P1 GTR.With the 2015 Geneva Motor Show right around the corner, the Brits unleashed the Vulcan for the whole world to see, and, as it turns out, Gaydon’s new baby is as special as it gets.

Skeptics that expected to see a beefed up, race-spec Vantage are in for quite a surprise, as the Vulcan is brand new not only in design, but under the hood as well. What’s more, it comes with its own racing program and the kind of exclusivity only Ferrari was able to deliver until now. 

2016 McLaren 675LT

McLaren’s hot, new 675 LT is a higher-performance variant of the 650S, and the LT portion of its name is derived from the wild 1997 F1 GT "Longtail" homologation special. That rare McLaren menaced the road with radically lengthened bodywork, racy aerodynamics, and a better power-to-weight ratio than the car on which it was based. The 675 LT has two of those things, but its tail? Quite vestigial, we’d say.

In fact, the 675LT is just 1.5 inches longer than the 650S, and it appears a decent stretch of that extra length comes from the sports car’s epic chin splitter. The rest goes to a slightly longer active rear spoiler that McLaren claims is 50 percent larger than the one fitted to the 650S. McLaren says that a “focus on outright performance, weight reduction, and ultimate levels of driver engagement” define a Longtail, so maybe we’re just being too literal. That said, the mighty F1 GT Longtail got more tail—the car was a full 25 inches longer than the regular F1—not to mention a full aero kit that entirely altered the supercar’s visuals.

Subaru’s 2017 BRZ car review

That Subaru’s 2017 BRZ should come with a turbocharged version of the company’s 2.0-liter flat-four FA engine, like the one that makes 268 horsepower inits WRX sedan, is a foregone conclusion. After four years of sameness, the too-buzzy, too-slow BRZ was beginning to look like the sports coupe the world had forgotten.

But the potential-laden coupe was due for a refresh, and Subaru had to do something. Imagine the predicament, then: Do they engineer a solution to the packaging problem that supposedly prevents fitting the turbocharged FA engine in the BRZ’s nose, or do they revise its naturally aspirated engine to make more power? Subaru representatives say that the primary concerns about the BRZ are a low center of gravity, balanced handling, and low cost, and those preclude fitting the turbocharged engine.

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque custom made

The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is easily one of the more attractive entries in the coupe-ish SUV set, beating newcomers like the BMW X4 for sheer beauty, and carrying tidier proportions than Infiniti's QX70.

Th Evoque is more concerned with style than off-road capability and, in that way, it's a refreshingly honest take on the modern crossover, as they're increasingly being purchased as fashion accessories and seldom if ever venture off pavement.

Offered in three-door and five-door variants, the Evoque is one of the best concept-to-production examples in a while. Nearly everything, from the sharp sheet metal to the stark interior, made the transition from show car to showroom. We applaud Land Rover for having the guts to make such a design statement with this model, and to bring it here in two different body configurations as well.

MERCEDES BENZ X CLASS REVIEW

The X-Class still is a concept at this point, but it's a concept in that wink-wink nudge-nudge sort of fashion. The final version should arrive at an upcoming auto show before hitting showrooms late in 2017. Well, not U.S. showrooms, of course, as we're not going to get the Benz pickup.

We've seen the spy shots of what we assumed would be called either the GLT or possibly the X-Class. It's built upon the bones of the latest Nissan NP300 Navara pickup, which is a body-on-frame truck. This truck also exists in rebadged form as the Renault Alaskan.

 A resculpted dash with a slimmer center stack and console brings the 6’s cabin in line with other Mazdas, such as the compact Mazda 3 and the CX-5 crossover, as does the seven-inch, tablet like color screen mounted high on the dash. The functions on the display can be operated both via touch and by using Mazda’s central control knob that sits neatly on the console next to the new electronic parking brake.

Mazda has shuffled the 3’s lineup a bit for 2017, doing away with the confusing i and s trim designations, moving advanced safety content into cheaper models, fiddling with the front and rear bumper designs, and adding G-Vectoring Control. Mazda also tells us it worked to reduce noise in the cabin; our tests recorded 71 decibels at 70 mph in this vehicle, versus 72 decibels that we measured in a 2015 model with the same power train.
